help explain a sentence

:!: I don't understand the sentence :"she would step onto the court and shouts of encouragement would roll down in waves." What does " roll down in waves" mean? Thank you.

I'm not entirely sure but if you think of how waves roll, my guess would be her shouts of encouragment was continuous.

This is referring to someone stepping on to a Tennis Court and the public responding by enthusiastically applauding and calling out encouragements. The "rolling down in waves" is just a poetic way of painting a picture in words as to the audience's reaction.
