Hi.
If I go to school as a pupil, I have to say: I go to school. (no article here)
If I go there as a pupil's parent, for instance, I have to say: I go to the school.
My question is if I finished school a long time ago and want say a sentence like this, do I need definite article:
I was learning English at (the?) school.
using the definite article

Re: using the definite article
As always, exact context is important. Also what sort of school? Is it the school you went to as a child, or a language school (since you mention English)? I assume, though, that it is your childhood school.Xkalibur wrote:If I go to school as a pupil, I have to say: I go to school. (no article here)

Here are some possible sentences:
I learned English at school.
I learned English at my school.
I learned English at the (language) school on Bond Street.
Yesterday I went back to my old school.
Yesterday I went back to the school that I went to when I was 10.
This is the school I used to go to.
The school I went to didn't teach Russian.
