if it wasn't for you, i would have been dead (in other words - you saved my life)
OR
if it hadn't been for you, i would have been dead

if neither of them is right, then what's the real right statement?

The first sentence is wrong:

If it wasn't for you, I would be dead......

The first sentence is used for something is not true in present....

The second one is used for something is not true in past.....

1) If it wasn't for you I would have been dead. (mixed unreal conditional) (correct sentence)

Example
While I was drowning you gave me a hand. If it wasn't for you I would have been drowned.

2) If it hadn't been for you I would have been dead. (correct sentence)

Example
Once, I was bitten by a snake and you gave me a serum.
If you hadn't given me a serum I would have been dead in 4 hours.
If it hadn't been for you I would have been dead in 4 hours.

But 1) and 2) have slightly different meaning

3) If it wasn't for you I would be dead (now). right but completely different meaning.

If it hadn't been for you (once) I would be dead (now). right one . different meaning. not much sence, this one carries  this case could be from Alan Ford serials
