What did you do from 9:00 to 9:30 last night?

Should I use the past continuous tense?

I was writing a letter.

You could use either. In response to the question you wrote above you could say "I read a magazine and I cleaned the house." You could also say, "I was reading a magazine and cleaning the house." Both work.
