Please proofread a short article: Body Shape Standard

Post by Leene »

Hello

I want to improve my writing and vocabularly skills and try to translate a short article from German to English. It would be generous, if somebody would have a look at it and correct me. Hope, the article is interesting for you as well!

Thank you very much!

Leene

Body Shape Standard

It was the first strike after assumption of office by the new president: The 18 dancers of the Cararets Crazy Horse refused to work and distributed leaflets among the visitors instead. They were not that frustrated because once yet they could see the legendary so called "girls", in civil manners: entirely normal young woman, without glamour, but very self-confident. They demanded a salary increase of 15 percent. This is apparently much, but they don't even earn 2000€ net and, into the bargain, in expensive Paris. Their job is tough. Almost 13 performances per week, work far into the night and, into the bargin, employment duties, that are demanding much training and renunication of them: the dancers must garantee "a special morphology", as Suzsanne Durand put it; the speaker of the ensemble meant by it, that standardized body shapes are to be observed.
As so often the matter isn't only the money in this labour battle, but also the dignity. The theatre doesn't pay them as artists but as actors in peepshows they argued. The circumstance that they dance naked (this is however only nearly true) is also indicating a higher salary.
The Parisians were full of sympathy and the websites from right winged "Figaro" to communism "Humanité" scored with videos and click lines. After a few days the management capitulated and everybody held the short end of the stick, who had hoped to send as a mediator into the labour battle.

Here's my proofread version of your (very commendable) attempt at translation: the corrected portions are in a different colour:

It was the first strike after assumption of office by the new president: The 18 dancers of the Cabarets Crazy Horse refused to work and distributed leaflets among the visitors instead. Still, the patrons were not too disappointed, since they got to see the legendary "girls"in their civil personas: entirely normal young woman, without glamour, but very self-confident. They demanded a salary increase of 15 percent. This is apparently substantial, because they don't earn even 2000€ net, and that, in expensive Paris. Their job is tough. Almost 13 performances per week, working far into the night and, into the bargain, duties that demand much training and renunciation of them: the dancers must guarantee "a special morphology", as Suzsanne Durand put it; the spokesperson for the ensemble meant by it that standardized body shapes are to be maintained.
As is so often the case, it isn't only the money in this labour battle, but also the dignity. The theatre doesn't pay them as artists but as actors in peepshows they argued. The circumstance that they dance naked (this is however only nearly true) also indicates a higher salary.
Parisians were full of sympathy and the websites from the right-wing "Figaro" to the communist "Humanité" scored with videos and click lines. After a few days the management capitulated and (everybody held the short end of the stick, who had hoped to send as a mediator into the labour battle).

The meaning of the matter within brackets is not clear. To get "the short end of the stick" is to get the worst of a bargain - the smaller or the less desirable part in a deal... who had hoped to send whom as a mediator? and did everyone lose out? apparently the performers got their demands and seem to have won...
