A or The

Post by freeot »

Which sentence is correct?
1. Would you like a large whisky or a small one?
2. Would you like the large whisky or the small one?
The question is on a grammar test, and I can imagine instances where either would be correct. Question one would be correct if a bartender was asking you how much whisky you wanted in your glass. Question 2 would be correct if you were asked to choose between two glasses of whisky placed in front of you. Now, I've read that you don’t use a or an with uncountable nouns, like whiskey. Does using large or small make the whisky quantifiable, therefore countable?

We can in fact use a/an with some uncountable nouns. Drinks like coffee or tea or often treated as countable in the sense of "a cup of coffee" or "two cups of coffee". The same applies to your whisky. It has nothing to do with large/small.
