Meaning "a short case"

Post by eeerina »

hello everyone!

Please help me to understand the meaning of the phrase "go get me a short case"
in the following context:

Cartoonist John Callahan, who was paralyzed following a drunken traffic accident was able to milk his personal tragedy for laughs. In one of his many cartoons, before discovering that he's paralyzed for life, John tells the attending patrolman, "There's a five-dollar bill in my left shirt pocket, get me a short case.

I know what your referring to and he's definitely referring to alcohol in the movie "He won't get far." I know this from context clues of him being an alcoholic and the spilled alcohol in the cartoon from the wreck. I think he's referring to a case of 12 oz beer cans but I'm not sure. Pretty abstract reference given the fact that your post is the top posting when you google "short case." I wondered as well. Other beer cans are called "tallboy's and are 16 oz. This is back in the 70's or something so I don't know if it was really a common term or not.
