use of "save"

Post by mateid »

Hello everybody,

I have a friend who's learning English and while studying prepositions came upon the following example in her manual:

"He was the only person I met save you."

I know that they were trying to say "except for you", but this particular sentence doesn't sound good to me. Is this proper English grammar? Shouldn't it rather be

"He was the only person I met, save for you."

Looking forward to your input on this!

The Oxford definition of save as a preposition is “other than” and the comma would seem to be optional here.
