"my friend and I" vs "I and my friend"

"my friend and I" vs "I and my friend"
would you explain to me why ...my friend and I is correct sentence whereas, I and my friend is incorrect.

1. My friend and I ate dinner.
2. I and my friend ate dinner. (not so polite)
1 and 2 are grammatically correct but 2 is not so polite because you put "I" before "my friend" (selfish).

2 sounds unnatural to me. I would much prefer to hear "me and my friend ate dinner".
