Usage of 'Strength' (in singular and plural sense)

I have a doubt and seek your opinion. Please see the following sentences:

The strength of students in the two schools is respectively 350 and 450.

The strength of students in the two schools are respectively 350 and 450.

Which one is correct? Please clarify.
