differentiate between be used to+ gerund and be used to +infinitive

Post by ardashir »

I know that be used to +gerund and a noun means be accustomed to it, but I can't understand these below sentence when I found in dictionary and grammar book. (actually is grammar rules)
1. Quizzes are used to determine how much material students have learned.
2. The simple present is used to express habitual or everyday activities.

There are three separate structures that are confusing you:

1. I am used to hot weather. I am used to driving on the left. (Accustomed to) :ok:
2. I used to smoke. (In the past I smoked. Now I don't.) :ok:
3. We use quizzes to test students. (Active voice) Quizzes are used to test students. (Passive voice) :ok:
