Punctuation

May I know what is the difference in meaning between these two sentences?

1. The aroma of the food drifted through the air, causing us to salivate unconsciously.

2. The aroma of the food drifted through the air causing us to salivate unconsciously.

The difference is that #1 is correctly punctuated.
