Certainly they are related.
First off, they are the present participle and past participle respectively of the verb "interest".
This story is interesting people worldwide.
This story has interested people for centuries.
Because we can say "very interesting" and "very interested", they are also (participial) adjectives.
The film was (very) interesting.
I was (very) interested in the film.
