Creating a simple sentence

Post by Tekain »

Hello everyone. A few days ago, i had a test from English Syntax and was unable to do one of the tasks. They were asking us to combine two ideas in a way that we express the meaning of cause/reason and form a simple, compound and complex sentences out of it. I did not have a problem with complex and compound, but i was unable to form a simple sentence out of them.

The first pair was:

Kristy is the smartest student in the group. She achieved the best result on the test.

The second pair was:

Ted tried very hard. He couldn’t solve the task.

How would you combine them into a simple sentence? Thank you!

Ted was unable to solve the task despite his best efforts.

(NB I am not sure that you can 'solve' a task. You solve a problem and perform a task,)

The first one is not absolutely do-able because it is not 100% stated that her superior ability caused her to do best in this particular test, but I suggest:

Kirsty's superior intelligence made her come top in the test.
