somebody became world champion?

Post by javhar »

Is it correct to say that someone "became world champion"? I come across that phrase fairly often, and it always makes me feel it must have been machine translated from another language, or written by a non-native speaker. In Dutch, for instance, "he became world champion" is the standard way of saying it. In English it somehow sounds awkward, though possibly technically correct, to me. One would typically say that "he won the world championship".

So is it wrong? Or awkward? Or perfectly fine?
