Is GM food acceptable?

Post by TalkingPoint » Tue Jan 27, 2004 3:10 pm

Is GM food (genetically modified food) acceptable? What are the advantages/disadvantages of genetically modifying food? What about genetically modifying non-food crops such as cotton?

English Checker
genetic modification: the deliberate changing of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material (genes, DNA)
crop: a plant cultivated on a large scale for food or other uses (eg coffee, wheat, cotton)

While Europoean show a great concern about the safety of GM
food ,is largely caused by spreading madcow desease i guess, although there is no solid evidence that can prove GM food is bad or good for human being health . But to the rest of world , seems less attention and more acceptable only required an approriate surveillance in place and all GM products must carry a mark when it on sale .
when still thousands people are in starvation in a lots of area , when the intension between and limited land and ever increasing population get intensified , the appearance of GM food , seems like a light in darkenss , bring people more hope in settle the feeding problem .

This is a new technology . when we look back the history of humanbeing , The new thing can never be stopped . It is only a matter of time for general people to accept it , Whether what will this technology bring us , It is depend upon how we manage it but not technology itself !

Is really Genetic Food good for health ??

Post by Adhir Garg » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:58 am

Hi All,

When this discussion is starting, Let us give the points regarding genetic food. The genetic food is prepared by modifying the properties of the food components. Please do not ask me what modification because it is more of chromosomes. e.g. if the tomato (natural) is light reddish, then to increase SALE, by GM they can make it dark reddish. The point is the usefulness of the GM food. Any change in natural thing (especially for food), would lead to an artificial thing, which wuld be definitely harmful for the living being...

People are also talking of changing sex of human body (i.e. modifying chromosomes), but i hope everybody reading this knows the harmfulness of this.. Imagine some hundreds of Hitler, thousands of destructive people can be manipulated by this GM.

Since the food lost some of its properties (definitely it gains a few another one), food becomes less qualitative actually. Carbohydrates are good for health, but if you eat only carbohydrates, would you body last ?? Definitely NO, because body needs some proteins, vitamins, minerals for survival. This is good for those places where the food is NOT produced but in countries (where vegetation is high), this should be AVOIDED.

Life is very short (max 100 years normally), so enjoy every moment of it

I think that GM food is acceptable as sciencetists must have done experiments on the GM food and it is proven to be safe before it is allowed on the market isn't it?

80% of U.S. exports of GM, therefore, abstain from consumption of products of American companies. Buy on principle - all that is advertised - harmful.
