Perhaps this reminded her of the desirableness of looking over all the old family letters, and destroying such as ought not to be allowed to fall into the hands of strangers; ...

Is 'such as ought not to be allowed' grammatical? I thought 'such as' should be followed by a noun or a NP, so I would accept 'such as those that ought not to be allowed'. Thanks. --- tk

It's perfectly grammatical. 'As' here is a relative pronoun, and 'such' a pronominal adjective, so the construction is effectively identical to e.g. 'those which ought not to be allowed'.
