Hello Alan,
Here's a sentence from the book Intermediate English Grammar by Raymond Murphy.
We saw Rose in town a few days ago.
In the sentence above the word town is a singular countable noun. Why is there no article before it?

You could grammatically insert 'the', but it would be redundant since 'in town' is a fixed expression.
