Dear TEACHER!

During a meeting Mr Pickwick observed that ... fame was dear to the heart
of every man.

a) the
b) a
c) -

We know that abstract nouns are commonly used without article with general sense.
We occasionally use the indefinite or definite article with specific meaning.
In this sentence which article ( the or a ) is used? And why?...
Please, could YOU explain the use of proper article --- the or a?

Thanks...

(c).

'A fame' is impossible, and the definite article would be required only in a phrase such as 'the fame that he sought'.
