My english understanding isnt so good.

This is what i just read..

"About 4 years ago, a year after my operation, I started looking for a new sporting activity and came across a free self defence class. Soon afterwards, and as a direct consequence I started taking kickboxing classes".

Heres my questions..
What happened first the kickboxing class or the self defence class?

First he FOUND a self-defence course, and then he TOOK a kick-boxing course.

In essence, they might be one and the same thing since kick-boxing is a form of self-defence.
