I need help on determining whether to use plural or singular in this sentence:

The witnesses were Hans Hansen's and Jens Jensen's wife / wives.

Obviously Hans and Jens are not married to the same person, but if I write "wives", it seems like they both have more than one wife.

Which is correct?
