Plan + verb form

The actor Richard Gere and his wife, Carey Lowell, have separated and planning on divorcing.
Some grammar books say that the verb plan takes either an infinitive
or a gerund (with and without "on") without difference in meaning . Is that right?
Thus,
(1) My family planned to spend the summer in the US.
(2) My family planned spending the summer in the US.
(3) My family planned on spending the summer in the US.
Are all the sentences above GRAMMATICALLY correct?..
