More on elliptical subordinate clause

Post by vpkannan »

Dear Alan

In my earlier post, you have answered in negative for my doubt whether it is correct to use finite verb without subject in the subordinate clause. However, the following sentence was found in a grammar book:

Many people came than had been invited.

However, I think the finite verb 'had been invited' is used without the possible subject 'who' and therefore it is wrong. Am I right please?

If you check, I think you'll find that it reads

Many MORE people came than had been invited.

which is a possible sentence!
