is the verb at the end?

Post by pattypatty »

dear Alan
I have a doubt

is this question correct?
what do you think is the most important meal of the day?
or is it better
what do you think the most important meal of the day is?

I have checked some examples in the internet. The first sounds correct but I have found some sentences where the verb is after the subject. Example: what do you think you are?
what do you think a feminist is?

thanks a lot

Technically, the second is correct, but, on account of the length of the subject phrase, the first would be considered acceptable by most speakers.
