I believe that the following is correct:
"In a handful of cases, pain is desired, in the rest it is unsought and wild."
(though am I missing a coma here?)
To make the sentence more poetic, though, could I say one of:
"In a handful of cases, pain is desired, in the rest, unsought and wild."
OR
"In a handful of cases, pain is desired, in the rest: unsought and wild."
in the rest, adjective OR in the rest: adjective
