Use of articles

Post by Menschenherz »

Hello everyone! It's a shame to admit, but, having passed CPE, I eventually discovered that I got lost in the numerous options of use of English articles. For instance, how do I put it here:

in (the) course of (the) prosecutorial investigation

?

I just can't figure out what the difference is with and without the definite articles here! I feel comfortable with both options. 'OK, Google' option doesn't help either. Shall I use just one 'the', or two? Or none at all?

Another trouble is numbers:

'In Contract #1', or 'in the Contract #1'? I'd prefer the first option, but again, I'm not quite sure about it. So I'd be grateful if someone could provide clarifications on this regard.

1. The first article is compulsory ('in the course of' is a fixed expression). The second is required if you are referring to a specific investigation (i.e. as opposed to investigations in general).
2. No article.
