Hi,
I've been told that 1 is wrong and 2 is correct, but I thought that the past perfect is used for two things in the past one happening before the other.
1. My grandparents had only known each other a few months before they got married.
2. My grandparents only knew each other a few months before they got married.
Can you tell me why 1 is not correct?
Thanks!

Re: Past Perfect or Simple
You have been misinformed!
There is nothing wrong with #1, except that some rather fussy users would prefer "had known each other (for) only a few months".
