use of infinitive

Post by hanuman_2000 »

Hello,

1. I am sorry to hear it.

The 'to hear' modifies 'sorry', so it is an adverb.

2. The order to advance was given.

The 'to advance' post-modify the 'order', so it is an adjective.

3. Let us pray.

The 'pray' is an abject of the verb 'let' , so it is noun.

Are my interpretation correct?

Thanks.

To some extent, although to avoid confusion we would term them 'adverbial/adjectival infinitives' rather than simply 'adverbs/adjectives'.
