Dear teacher,
Between the following two sentences, I have been told that the second one is better than the first. Besides the fact that the first sounds awkward, may I know how I can grammatically explain that the adverbial clause in sentence 1 (="though you...that") is in the wrong place?
1. And, thank you very much, though you needn't have done that, for the plaque, sir.
2. And, thank you very much for the plaque, sir, though you needn't have done that.

There is no specifically grammatical explanation. It is a simple matter of clarity: pronouns normally refer back, not ahead, to their antecedent.
