Dear user
The following sentence is from "Little women" book. what are grammar rules of following sentence?
"You know the reason Mother proposed not having any presents this Christmas was because it is going to be a hard winter for everyone".

What, I suspect, is confusing you here is the long subject of the nominal clause following 'You know (that)...', namely 'the reason....this year'.

Note also that the use of 'because' in the predicate of the clause is a popular conversational substitute for more standard/literary 'that'.
