Use of adverbial phrase

Hi. which of the following expressions is correct in using the adverbial phrase?

1. Learning takes place in the stages from A to B.
2. Learning takes place from A to B.
3. Learning takes place in from A to B.

I am thinking that no.3 is clearly awkward and no.2 needs a preposition which indicates a location (indicating 'where' the learning takes place) such as 'in'. Can someone explain? Thank you.
