Language as we know it is a means of thought.
(from a grammar book for Japanese high school students)

What does as mean?

I could not find any dictionary definition that precisely fits the meaning of as.

I believe that as we know it is adjectival and modifies "Language".

'As' here is a conjunction. It means literally something like 'in the way in which'.
