Use of the definite article

Post by Jeaner » Tue Sep 03, 2019 3:03 pm

I am tutoring an ESL student in the use of the a, an & the. When considering the following phrase, is there a rule that addresses the need for 'the' before day, but not before night? ....during the day, but not at night.

I don't think there's any rule for that. It's simple one of many phrases that have grown up, like "go home" but "go to school", and that learners just need to learn.

You can of course say:
during the night
