[help]which sentence is correct?

1. Not far from the club there was a garden, whose owner seated himself in it playing bridge with his children every afternoon.
2. Not far from the club there was a garden, whose owner seated himself in playing bridge with his children every afternoon.
3.Not far from the club there was a garden, whose owner seated in it playing bridge with his children every afternoon.
4.Not far from the club there was a garden, its owner seated in it playing bridge with his children every afternoon.
which of the 4 is correct?
why are No.2 and No.4 incorrect?

#4 is correct, although the phraseology is highly literary.

Re. #2: 'whose owner seated himself in playing bridge' is meaningless.
