the phrase: [learning to improve my swimming skill]

I have made up the sentence below.

(1) I'm learning to improve my swimming skill.

Most of my non-native English speaking friends think it doesn't make sense. I don't agree with them. This is what I think my sentence means. I'm learning how to swim. Because I'm not good at swimming, I need to spend more time improving my skill.

I think my single sentence is a condensed way of saying all those things.

Do you think my sentence is okay? Thank you very much for your help.

"Swimming skills" (plural) would be more idiomatic.
