correct verb form when used with "ever": [ever got] or [have ever got]

Post by ansonman »

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) This is the fifth limited-edition watch I ever got for my collection.

(2) This is the fifth limited-edition wathc I've ever got for my collection.

My friends are not native English speakers. They think both verb forms are possible. You can use (1) if you got the watch sometime ago. However, if you just got it, you can use (2).

Which verb form of "to get" is correct when it is used with "ever"? Thank you very much for your help.

--> This is the fifth limited-edition watch I got for my collection.

N.B. 'Ever' is not used with ordinal numbers beyond 'first'.
