adverbial disjuncts

Post by Bradaun »

Hi,

In the sentence, "Superstitiously she steered clear of the graveyard", is the opening adverb a disjunct? I am confused as to whether it is a comment on or evaluation of the whole sentence or one that relates to "steered clear" alone. Btw, my punctuation style is not to add comma if it relates to the verb and is not a comment on the sentence as a whole.

Apologies if a specific case like this has been raised before!

Thanks

Classification of adverbials varies considerably from one authority to another, but 'superstitiously' here is, I would say, an instance of what Quirk et al. would term a subjunct.
