to have a cat come to my window .....

Post by johnbythesea »

Hello. I am pretty sure this sentences is correct, but I am really struggling to understand the grammar and would greatly appreciate some of your expertise.

"I have a cat come to my window every night", the easier sentence to understand is of course "I have a cat that comes to my window every night".

Can anyone explain the different, particularly in grammar.

thank you

Yes, both are grammatical but they do not mean the same.
In

I have a cat come to my window every night.

'have' functions as a causative verb (= I cause a cat to come...).

In

I have a cat that comes to my window every night.

'have' has more or less its usual meaning (although here, clearly, without any implication of ownership).
