such that

Post by navit »

1) Tom pushed Jack in such a way that he would fall.
2) Tom pushed Jack such that he would fall.
(It was Tom's intention to make Jack fall. We don't know if Jack fell.)

3) Pete accidently bumped into me in such a way that I fell.
4) Pete accidently bumped into me such that I fell.

Which of the sentences 1-4 are correct?

'1' and '2' express intention, but '3' and '4' express result.

Gratefully,

All are grammatical and have the desired meaning.

N.B. In contemporary parlance, 'so that' is more natural than 'such that'.
