The less Romans became occupied with work, the more bored and critical of the government they became

Post by Happyet »

(a) The less occupied with work Romans became, the more bored and critical of the government they became.

(b) The less Romans became occupied with work, the more bored and critical of the government they became.

Which one is grammatically correct? And why?
Thank you in advance.

Both are possible, but (b) is stylistically preferable.
