a role to play

Post by navit »

Is this sentence correct:
1) He was offered a role to play Superman.

I think I have heard sentences like that, but I don't seem to be able to parse it.

Is it equivalent to:

2) He was offered a role in order to play Superman.

'2' doesn't make much sense.

Gratefully,

The sentence is meaningless.

-->He was offered THE ROLE OF Superman.
