awhile vs a while

Post by SoulSeeker »

Hi teacher,

I know an adverb "awhile" modifies a verb. But, I am confused why the following sentence is using "a while" to modify a verb "had said", instead of awhile?

"At a luncheon I attended recently, a speaker shared with the audience something I had said a while ago."

Please advise. Thanks.

Nowadays, especially in BrE, it is common for 'awhile' to be written as two words.
