Tons of: singular or plural verb?

Post by toedrika »

Dear Professor,

I am not sure whether ti use a singular ir plural verb after "tons of":

Tons of research shows/show that a lot of sorts of gases that are released by smoking are harmful to the environment.

Thanks and best regards

Here the use is figurative, and so we would use the singular.
