Hi!

Which of the following sentences is correct and why?

He was an old guy then, but he has been a policeman all his life.
He was an old guy then, but he had been a policeman all his life.

Both are grammaticallly possible; they differ only in meaning.

However, in terms of probability, #2 is the more likely.
