Peter finds out that Bob no longer works for John. So when he meets Bob, the following dialog takes place between them.

Peter: "I hear you and John aren't working together anymore."

Bob: "Yeah, [I've stopped]/[I stopped] working for him because he didn't give me the bonus he promised me. I'm looking for a job now."


Are both options correct in this case? Thanks.

Yes, both are acceptable (although many BrE speakers would prefer the present perfect if the termination seemed recent).
