It was the year 1916, in a French forest where the Battle of Verdun took place. With millions of shell fired in a battle that lasted 300 days.
The French were able to secure victory but not without a high price. They have lost 300,000 soldiers and the destruction of an area larger than the city of Paris. A name was given to the forest, “Zone Rouge,” or Red Zone, where “trees no longer grow, and only the brave or foolish have dared tread" in that area.
The aim was to 'bleed the French army white', according to German chief of the general, Erich von Falkenhayn.
