Books to learn English?

Postby gollum38 » Fri Nov 19, 2004 10:26 pm

hi everybody !
ok, i've tried to speak english since three months, and, wanting to learn more, i have two questions :

when are we supposed to use "this" rather than "that" ? for example, if i see a car am i gonna say "i love this car" or "i love that car"? Why do i chose one rather than the other ?

i also wondered what books could i read to learn more english ?

thanks a lot for your help !!!
i'm sorry for my very bad and poor english !!! :?

Hi gollum38,

Although this is Learning English forum, it is not a place to ask. You can visit our Help Desk to post your question. I hope you will like that page!

Anyway, your last question:
i also wondered what books could i read to learn more English?

is not bad. So I let the topic run under a new name, ok?

For me, English Grammar in use by Raymond Murphy is a good book for basic grammar.

Or you can also try Understanding and Using English language by Betty Azar (up to 3th edition), including a reference book and an exercise book.

For reference I like Practical English Usage by Michael Swan.

Hope that helps. Perhaps other members will bring us other good books ...

Best wishes,
Pirate

Try to read this book, "the elements of style" by William Strunk, Jr. It's a worth of time spending to read a book. 8)

You mean you've got an English Grammar book that you don't want and are offering it to the first one that wants it, for free?
