Dear teacher,

"In fact, we have been planning for an event such as this literally since we walked through the doors of H.H.S. back in 2001," Mr. Thompson said.

Q : What does "back" function in the sentence?

All the best,

Adverbial. It means 'a long time ago/all the way back (in time)'.
