I need clarification on a coditional sentence

Post by DmitryL »

Hello,
While reading a detective story I found out this sentence: "I don't know. But if I had to guess, it would be somewhere around seven thirty". I wonder wheather this sentence is correct?
Shouldn't it be like this "...But if I had to guess, it would have been.... ". If both phrases are appropriate, is there any major or slight meaning difference between them?
Thanks a lot,
Dmitry.

"What time does the train leave today?"
"I don't know. But if I had to guess, it would be somewhere around seven-thirty." :ok:

"What time did the train leave yesterday?"
"I don't know. But if I had to guess, it would have been somewhere around seven-thirty." :ok:
