Adverbs vs Adverbials

Postby Norway » Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:50 pm

How are adverbs and adverbials different?

I don't understand how an adverb and an adverbial can be different when the adverb can function as an adverbial!

I get that the adverb can be a word and that it is a word class like i.e. adjectives.
I also get that they modify adjectives and adverbs in phrases both pre and post are possible.
BUT an adverb functioning as an adverbial?

Strictly speaking, an adverb is an adverbial, but in practice the latter term is generally used to denote phrases, but not single words, serving an adverbial function.
